Tom is a PhD student of Human Centered Design and Engineering at the University of Washington in Seattle. His current research interests are in information locality, and how proximity to an emerging crisis event shapes online user behavior. Prior to commencing his PhD, Tom served as a program director of a 501(c)(3) non-profit conservation organization where he developed information infrastructures and the group's website and social media channels. Tom holds an MS in Geographical Information Systems and a BS in Computing. In 2015 he was shortlisted for awards in the Association of Geographical Information (AGI) Student of the Year and Early Career Researcher categories for work exploring trail user sentiment and social media usage on a national trail. In his spare time Tom is an avid trail runner, sometimes ultra-marathoner, but mostly a run-commuter.
